Chapter3
Way of preparation the meals
Many types of food can be eaten raw; others have to be prepared. The room where the food is prepared is called kitchen. The procedures we do with food involve washing, cutting, or adding other foods or ingredients, including spices.
Before the actual cooking, we have to buy the food. Afterwards the food must be prepared for cooking, i.e. some types of food need to be peeled, cut, chopped.
To peel means to remove the skin from the vegetables or fruit, e.g. onions, bananas.
To cut = to divide the food into small pieces.
To chop = to cut into small pieces, generally it is used with vegetables.
To add = to put ingredients together.
To mix = to combine two or more things together using a spoon or electric mixer.
To stir = to mix liquid ingredients together using a spoon.
There are different ways how we can cook the food. The basic techniques are:
  • Baking – cooking in an oven without extra fat. We usually bake bread, cakes, pastries.
  • Steaming – preparation of food by heating it in the steam from boiling water. This method is the healthiest way to prepare vegetables.
  • Grilling – typical for outdoor cooking. Food is cooked on a grill.
  • Roasting – preparing meat in an oven or over a fire.
  • Boiling – cooking in boiling water (100°C), typical for pasta.
  • Frying – cooking food in hot oil or fat. We fry steaks or French fries. This technique is not recommended very often as the meal contains a lot of fat.

Cutlery or silvery is used for preparing, serving and eating food. It is often made of steel and it consists of spoon, fork and knife.
